The table is where most Americans will gather this Thanksgiving Day for a meal and fellowship with family and friends. Some have traveled a long journey to spend a few hours with family. Some will have an empty seat at the table — with only memories left of the person who was alive and well last Thanksgiving.
My tradition is to bring out the china, silver, and crystal to decorate the dining table — fancy, the way by grandmothers did. The television is turned to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade — the only day I can watch continuous hours of television. After the the meal is over I drag out all the Christmas décor. The Christmas lapel pins come out as well starting today for the next few weeks each day I wear a Christmas pin, this is the one tradition I started myself when I was a teenager and have kept it going. Even on Saturdays, the day I pray no one notices be in town doing errands because I have no makeup, sweatshirt and hat to cover the fact that I didn’t brush my hair — I have a Christmas pin on my sweater. The other traditions I inherited from my parents and grandparents. Traditions seem to bring back good memories of holidays gone by.
I love decorating for Christmas — and then come December 26th it all comes down again to anticipate the arrival of next year’s Thanksgiving Day.
